BRUSSELS, March 6. /TASS/. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated that EU countries should discuss French President Emmanuel Macron's proposal to bring European nations under the protection of France's nuclear forces.
"All good ideas around the table have to be a part of our discussion," she said ahead of the EU summit in Brussels, responding to a journalist's question about Paris' nuclear initiative.
Earlier, Macron announced plans to initiate discussions with allies on the possibility of extending France's nuclear deterrent protection to European countries. This move followed a call from Friedrich Merz, a candidate for Germany’s chancellorship. The French president also highlighted growing threats to Europe and France, citing Russia as a potential concern. He used this argument to justify increasing defense spending beyond the previously approved plan. Additionally, Macron reaffirmed his commitment to supporting Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia.
Later, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov, responding to a TASS question, called Macron's rhetoric very confrontational and noted that the French leader's statements made it seem as if Paris was eager to continue the war.
