BRUSSELS, February 24. /TASS/. The foreign ministers of EU member states are preparing to present a new military aid package for Ukraine today, which will include ammunition supplies, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, announced.
"We are discussing and hopefully can pass the 16th package of sanctions, which includes [restrictions on] gaming consoles to shadow fleet, different aspects. Then, we have also put forward a new defense initiative to support Ukraine with ammunition capabilities in the short term," she said upon arrival at the meeting of foreign ministers of the union, noting that European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen is now in Kiev.
Kallas also added that new EU military initiatives will be discussed at an emergency summit of EU leaders on March 6.
The EU foreign ministers are meeting in Brussels today, where they plan to approve the 16th package of sanctions against Russia. They will also discuss the talks between the US and Russia held in Riyadh, further strengthening military aid to Ukraine, and potentially relaxing sanctions against Syria.
On February 21, Andrius Kubilius, European Commissioner for Defense and Space, stated that during von der Leyen's visit to Kiev on February 24, a new European aid package for Ukraine would be presented, potentially amounting to hundreds of billions of euros.
Reports in European media suggested that the EU countries might approve an aid package for Ukraine worth up to 700 billion euros. These reports emerged shortly after the new US administration indicated that the conflict should be resolved as soon as possible, that Ukraine should not be part of NATO, and that the hundreds of billions of dollars in US military aid already provided to Kiev should be compensated.
