Turkey ready to be mediator between US, Syria’s new authorities — top diplomat

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan also said that Ankara "is coordinating actions on the situation in Syria with Saudi Arabia at the highest level"

RABAT, December 15. /TASS/. Turkey is ready to act as a mediator between the United States and Syria’s new authorities, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said.

"We are ready for acting as mediators between Washington on the new authorities in Syria," he said in an interview with the Al Arabiya television channel.

He also said that Ankara "is coordinating actions on the situation in Syria with Saudi Arabia at the highest level."

Fidan added that Turkey wants to see a democratic civilian government in Syria.

"We would like Syria to form democratic civilian authorities," he said. "We don’t want Syria’s new authorities to repeat what [Bashar] Assad did."

"We will help the new authorities in Syria," he said, adding that his country "is not going to replace Iran in Syria." "I don’t think that Syria will be an arena for disputes, bearing in mind Iran being aware of the new situation," he stressed.

Armed opposition units in Syria launched a large-scale offensive on government troops in the Aleppo and Idlib governorates in late November. On December 8, they entered Damascus, while President Bashar Assad stepped down and fled the country. On December 10, Mohammed al-Bashir, who had led the so-called Syrian Salvation Government in the Idlib governorate, announced his appointment as head of Syria’s interim government, saying that the transitional period will last until March 1, 2025.
