Recently resigned Abkhazian President Bzhania says he is outside the republic

The former president said he was going to Moscow for several days

SUKHUM, November 22. /TASS/. Former President of Abkhazia Aslan Bzhania, who resigned earlier this week, told TASS that he is currently outside of the republic.

"I am not in Abkhazia right now. I’m going to Moscow for several days," the ex-president said.

On November 15, the government complex in Sukhum was occupied by the Abkhazian opposition, who demanded that an agreement with Russia be nixed. On November 19, the authorities and the opposition reached an agreement, which stipulated Bzhania’s resignation. Prime Minister Alexander Ankvab also resigned and was replaced by opposition candidate Valery Bganba. After the agreement was reached, the protesters left the grounds of the government complex.

On November 19, the lawmakers accepted the president’s resignation; Badra Gunba assumed office as the Interim President on the same day. On November 20, Gunba accepted Ankvab’s resignation and appointed Bganba as the Acting Prime Minister.
