Representatives of the administration of US President Joe Biden has been in direct contact with Russia to warn Moscow not to deploy a new nuclear-armed antisatellite weapon in outer space, the Wall Street Journal wrote, citing unnamed officials of the US administration.
According to the publication, one of the channels that the US authorities used included Biden’s national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, and Yury Ushakov, a foreign-policy adviser to Russian President Vladimir Putin. As the Wall Street Journal wrote, the US authorities also tried to appeal to China, India and the Group of Seven countries so that they too could influence Moscow.
In addition, the newspaper points out, the emergence of information about the threat in the space sector "caught administration officials and lawmakers alike by surprise."
Earlier, reports appeared in the American media that a certain threat to US national security may be associated with the Russian Federation’s alleged plans to place nuclear weapons in space. The Russian leader's press secretary, Dmitry Peskov, in a conversation with reporters, called such publications another ploy by the White House. At a meeting with Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu, President Vladimir Putin stressed that Russia "has always been strongly against the deployment of nuclear weapons in space.".
