Hamas appreciates Russia’s responsible position on Gaza in UN Security Council

Senior Hamas official Osama Hamdan confirmed that, in Hamas' opinion, the adopted UN Security Council resolution on Gaza is "weak, insufficient and does not correspond to the current situation in the enclave"

CAIRO, December 24. /TASS/. Palestine’s Hamas welcomes the actions of the Russian delegation during the discussion and adoption of the UN Security Council resolution on the Gaza Strip, senior Hamas representative Osama Hamdan said.

"Hamas appreciates the position of Arab states who proposed a resolution on Gaza for a review in the UN Security Council and attempted to improve its contents, and it also appreciates the responsible position of the Russian delegation, who sought to introduce amendments that would contribute to the end of the [Israeli] aggression in the enclave," Hamdan said, according to the movement’s Telegram channel. However, he noted, "this attempt clashed with the US’ position."

He reaffirmed that, in Hamas’ opinion, the adopted UN Security Council resolution on Gaza is "weak, insufficient and it does not meet the current situation in the enclave."

A while ago, the movement issued a special statement, in which it pointed out that the "US Administration was working to strip the resolution of its essence and to present it in a form that would allow the [Israeli] occupation to complete the destruction and murder."

Hamas believes that the Security Council must force Israel to "deliver enough humanitarian aid to all districts of Gaza, especially in the northern regions."

Previously, the UN Security Council passed the draft resolution, proposed by Arab states. The document was endorsed by 13 countries, while Russia and the US abstained. In order for the resolution to pass, it was supposed to secure nine Security Council member votes, and no permanent member state could oppose it. Russia proposed an amendment that was supposed to bring back the call for an immediate end of hostilities, but it was blocked by the US.
