BELGRADE, March 12. /TASS/. Serbia’s refusal to join the anti-Russian sanction policy is rooted in its national interests and is based on international law, Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic said on Sunday.
"The Serbian government insists that our position on the sanctions [against Russia] is based on international law and Serbia’s interests," she said in an interview with the TV Prva. "We are paying the price [of the refusal to join the sanctions], but we think that this is a principled position and we will defend it as long as we can."
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said on Friday that he cannot vow not impose sanctions against Russia but the country has been managing not to do so as of yet.
After the beginning of Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine, Vucic said in an address to the nation that although Serbia supports Ukraine’s territorial integrity, it will not impose sanctions against Russia. He also announced that Belgrade is suspending army and police drills with all foreign partners. He noted that Serbia considers Russia and Ukraine to be brotherly nations, regrets what is going on in Eastern Europe and is ready to offer humanitarian assistance to Ukraine.
