Turkish opposition failed to pick candidate for presidential elections — report

Turkey is set to hold presidential and parliamentary elections before June 18

ANKARA, March 2. /TASS/. The Nation Alliance, an alliance of Turkey’s six opposition parties, on Thursday was unable to decide on a candidate to nominate for presidential elections, the A-Haber television channel reported.

Politicians representing the parties plan to hold another meeting to discuss the issue on March 6, the report said.

A-Haber reported that a decision on a joint candidate wasn’t reached because Good Party leader Meral Aksener opposed the nomination of Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the leader of the country’s main opposition force, the Republican People’s Party.

Turkey is set to hold presidential and parliamentary elections before June 18. Erdogan on Wednesday reaffirmed plans to hold the vote on May 14 so it happens before the season of vacations, exams at educational establishments and religious holidays. He is expected to officially announce the election date on March 10 or 11. It needs to be endorsed by parliament or a presidential decree.
