US must fulfill commitment not to support Taiwan independence — Wang Yi

Director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Communist Party of China Central Committee added that "on the Taiwan question, the US side needs to respect history and the facts, abide by political commitments, and act upon the statement of "not supporting Taiwan independence"

BEIJING, February 19. /TASS/. The United States must actually fulfill its commitments not to support Taiwan independence, Wang Yi, Director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee said during a meeting on Saturday with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Munich.

"‘Taiwan independence’ must be firmly opposed and the one-China principle must be credibly followed. On the Taiwan question, the US side needs to respect history and the facts, abide by political commitments, and act upon the statement of "not supporting Taiwan independence," the statement on the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Wang Wenbin said earlier that the Pentagon should cut off military contact with Taiwan in order to prevent another escalation of tensions in the Taiwan Strait.

Taiwan has been governed by its local administration since 1949 when the remaining Kuomintang forces led by Chiang Kai-shek (1887-1975) fled to the island after suffering a defeat in China’s civil war. Since then, Taiwan has preserved the flag and some other symbols of the Republic of China that had existed in mainland China before the Communists came to power. Beijing regards the island as one of its provinces and this position is supported by most countries, including Russia.
