China firmly stands for dialogue on resolving Ukraine crisis, senior diplomat says

According to Wang Yi, Beijing calls for preserving the leading role of the United Nations

MUNICH, February 18. /TASS/. The Chinese authorities call for a political solution to the Ukrainian crisis, Wang Yi, director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, said on Saturday.

"As for the Ukraine issue, China supports peace talks. China’s position is that the situation in Ukraine should be resolved through political means," he pointed out, addressing the Munich Security Conference. "We firmly stand for peace and dialogue," Wang Yi added.

According to him, Beijing calls for preserving the leading role of the United Nations. He noted that the reason behind many conflicts was that some countries "don’t really pay attention to the Charter and principles" of the UN.

Wang Yi emphasized that political confrontation on the international stage was "harmful to global solidarity" as it undermined international cooperation and mutual trust.
