VIENNA, February 10. /TASS/. International Atomic Energy Agency’s Director General Rafael Grossi held talks with senior Russian officials this week that enabled them to hold detailed discussions of a plan to establish a nuclear safety and security protection zone around the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant, the agency said in a statement on Friday.
"Both in Kiev and Moscow, we are continuing our determined diplomatic work aimed at establishing the zone as soon as possible. This week’s meetings in Moscow were important in this regard, enabling us to discuss the plan in detail with senior representatives of the Russian government," the statement quoted Grossi as saying.
An IAEA mission led by Grossi traveled to the ZNPP in September 2022 and left several agency employees there as observers. Afterward, the agency published a report calling for the establishment of a safety zone around the ZNPP to prevent accidents arising from hostilities. Grossi has been holding talks with Russian and Ukrainian officials to advance the idea.
Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev and Rafael Grossi held talks in Moscow earlier on February 9. It was stated that the talks focused on the establishment of a safety zone around the Zaporozhye NPP.
