Senior UN official voices fears over influx of weapons to conflict zone in Ukraine

Izumi Nakamitsu added that measures to resist the potential diversion of arms and ammunition would be a potential key to post-conflict recovery, regional security and stability, as well as conflict prevention efforts in other regions

UNITED NATIONS, February 8. /TASS/. The massive influx of weapons into the conflict zone in Ukraine raises concerns about its possible escalation, UN Under Secretary-General, High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Izumi Nakamitsu said on Wednesday.

"Large scale influx of weapons into any situation of armed conflict amplifies concerns regarding the escalation of the conflict and risks of diversion," she said at a meeting of the UN Security Council on Ukraine.

Nakamitsu added that measures to resist the potential diversion of arms and ammunition would be a potential key to post-conflict recovery, regional security and stability, as well as conflict prevention efforts in other regions.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and other Russian officials have repeatedly drawn attention to the risk the weapons that the West supplies to Ukraine may spread to other regions. Russia’s ambassador to the United States, Anatoly Antonov, warned that Ukraine’s militarization by the West directly threatened European and global security.
