Spanish foreign minister hopes Ukraine conflict not to turn into ‘second Afghanistan’

According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Spain, Jose Manuel Albares, Spain evaluates and uses every chance to return peace to Ukraine

MADRID, February 4. /TASS/. Madrid hopes that the Ukraine conflict will not become chronic and will not transform into "a second Afghanistan," Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares said in a televised interview with La Sexta channel on Friday.

"I hope it will not be a chronic conflict and will not become a second Afghanistan," the minister said.

Commenting on Brazil’s recent initiative to resolve the crisis, Albares said, "Spain is examining, supporting and seizing any chance to return peace to Ukraine, peace in accordance with the UN Charter."

Earlier, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said the current mediators "have nothing to offer" to the parties to the Ukraine conflict and proposed establishing a new international platform to help Moscow and Kiev negotiate. He also said that he would be ready to mediate talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart Vladimir Zelensky, if needed.
