LPR does not have death penalty but exception may be made for war criminals

No such decision had been made yet, LPR’s leader Leonid Pasechnik noted

ST. PETERSBURG, June 16. /TASS/. The legislation of the Lugansk People’s Republic does not envisage the death penalty, but an exception may be made for war criminals who will face the tribunal, the LPR’s leader, Leonid Pasechnik, told TASS. Speaking on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum on Thursday he said a decision to take such a measure would be discussed with the legislators and law enforcement-related ministers.

"Possibly, an exception will be made for the tribunal. I am not prepared to say anything definite for now. We will make a decision collectively, together with legislators and law enforcement-related ministers," Pasechnik said in reply to a TASS question.

He pointed out that no such decision had been made yet.

"We act in accordance with international conventions, treaties and so on. We will address this issue, which is quite serious and quite complicated," he said, adding that perhaps the death penalty would be too mild for some.

"You know, there can be execution by firing squad. This is the easiest form of punishment. And if, figuratively speaking, you make the convict cut toys for children with a fretsaw for the rest of his life in solitary confinement, it’s not clear what is worse. To restore [destroyed infrastructure], for example, and so on. Therefore, I say again, we will make a decision collectively," Pasechnik said.
