MOSCOW, February 16, 8:17 /ITAR-TASS/. With little over a week in the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, The Russian national team has conquered 15 medals, which is a three-fold increase comparing to the 2010 Olympics in Canada’s Vancouver.
The Russian team had an unsuccessful start in Vancouver only winning one gold, two silver and two bronze medals in first eight days. However, the team reached the middle of the two-week Olympics in Sochi with by far weighty figure snatching four gold, six silver and five bronze medals.
As of now, Russia boasts the highest number of 15 medals and is followed by the Netherlands and the United States, each having won 14 medals. The top trio is rounded up by Norway with 13 medals.
Russia made a jump in the medals standings on February 15 after Victor Ahn won gold in short track and Alexandrov Tretiakov raced to the Olympic victory in skeleton. They were the first gold medals in their respective sports disciplines in history of Russia’s Winter Olympics participation.
Russia made a considerable movement forward in many sports disciplines in four years taking into account Tretiakov’s bronze in Vancouver and first place in Sochi. His teammate Elena Nikitina took the bronze in women’s skeleton. Ahn brought Russia its first ever bronze medal in short track’s distance of 1,500 meters and then took gold in 1,000 meters leading another Russian, Vladimir Grigoriev, to the silver medal.
