Former Russian defense minister Sergey Ivanov dies at age 73

Sergey Ivanov served as honorary president of the VTB United League

MOSCOW, June 26. /TASS/. Russia’s former defense minister and ex-special representative of the head of state Sergey Ivanov has died at the age of 73, the VTB United League, in which he served as honorary president, said.

"Sergey Borisovich was there from the beginning of the VTB United League and made a key contribution to the formation and development of the tournament," it said in a statement.

"Thanks to his initiative, support and attention to basketball, the league has become a key Russian sports project, bringing together leading clubs and giving a new impetus to the development of the game."

Ivanov is a graduate of the Red Banner Institute of the KGB of the USSR. He worked at the KGB SSR directorate for the Leningrad Region, where Vladimir Putin served at that time.

From 1981 to 1991, Ivanov worked in the First Main Directorate. Until 1998 he worked in the Foreign Intelligence Service. From August 1998 to November 1999, he was FSB deputy director, working under Putin's leadership.

In November 1995, he was appointed Secretary of the Security Council and in March 2001 - defense minister - a position he held until March 2007. From February 2007 to May 2008, he served as first deputy government chairman, and from May 2008 to December 2011, he was deputy government chairman overseeing industry, transport and communications.

From December 2011 to August 2016, he headed the presidential administration, and later was appointed special representative of the head of state on environmental protection, ecology and transport. He was a member of the supervisory board of Rostec and the Russian Direct Investment Fund, and chairman of the board of trustees of the Russian Military Historical Society.

In 2008, Ivanov became one of the initiators of the creation of the VTB United League. He headed the organization until 2014, and later assumed the post of honorary president. Ivanov was replaced by Sergey Kushchenko.

In 2024, Ivanov was inducted into the VTB United League Hall of Fame as one of the founders and long-term leaders of the tournament.
