Russia’s main New Year’s tree illuminates Kremlin with 1,500 ornaments, shimmering lights

The New Year’s tree is additionally adorned with about 1,200 meters of LED strings, 54 shimmering globes and 160 running-light decorations shaped like melting icicles

MOSCOW, December 22. /TASS/. Russia’s main New Year’s tree is ready for festivities and as of today can be viewed by all Kremlin visitors.

As the press service of the Russian Presidential Property Department told TASS, this year, the tree’s decorations follow a "festive concert" theme. The 25-meter-tall tree has been decorated with ornaments in the shape of drums, violins, trumpets and masks. As 2024 in Russia has been declared the Year of the Family, the tree’s decorations above all were selected to appeal to the Kremlin’s younger guests and foster an appreciation for the world of art and culture. This theme is continued on the fencing under the fir tree which depicts the very best performances by young actors, ballet dancers and musicians.

"Overall, the tree is decorated with more than 1,500 ornaments, about 600 of them in line with the general theme," the press service specified. The New Year’s tree is additionally adorned with about 1,200 meters of LED strings, 54 shimmering globes and 160 running-light decorations shaped like melting icicles. "The color palette of the design is gold, pearl, red and white to harmoniously complement the general color scheme of white-stone cathedrals with golden and silver domes," the press service explained.

The Russian Presidential Property Department hopes that the tree, sparkling with hundreds of lights, will bring around-the-clock joy to visitors and guests of the capital thanks to special materials used to make the ornaments. The garlands wrapping the branches and the eight-point star at the top will shine continuously while separate light-emitting diodes will work in a twinkling mode. The fencing will be lit by 16 spotlights that gradually change color, casting a reflection in snowflakes and creating the northern lights effect.

The 84-year-old fir tree was brought to the Kremlin from the Moscow Region on December 13. It will be featured on Cathedral Square until the end of New Year’s and Christmas festivities.
