MOSCOW, May 15. /TASS/. Coronavirus incidence worldwide is again on the rise after a seven-week decrease. In all, from May 7 through May 13, about 3.4 mln infections were registered which is approximately 0.2 mln more than over the previous comparable period, according to TASS’ calculations.
However, mortality continues to decrease. For the fourth week in a row, less than 20,000 people died from the infection.
Growth in Asia
The spread rates of the infection are down almost everywhere in Europe yet are surging in Asia and in America. Thus, this week, Japan registered over 40,000 daily infections while Malaysia, where the incidence has been on the downturn since early March, is recording an increase again. In Thailand, the decrease has slowed down - the entire week it was recording about 7,000-8,000 new daily cases.
This week, first infections were reported in North Korea. Yonhap, citing local media outlets, reported that the republic recorded more than 18,000 infections and six fatalities due to the disease. Thus, currently there are only two countries where no cases of the coronavirus have been officially registered, Turkmenistan with the population of about 6 mln and the island state of Tuvalu in the Pacific Ocean (about 12,000 residents).
America and Europe
In North America, the situation has aggravated in the US where over 80,000 daily cases are being registered which has not been happening in the country since mid-February. This is the highest indicator worldwide this week. In Latin America, new outbreaks are being recorded in Colombia and Brazil.
In Europe, a serious increase is registered only in Spain where the incidence reached the levels of mid-March, while over this week, in France, the incidence dropped by a third, in Italy - by a quarter, and in Germany - almost by one half.
A new wave of the infections is recorded in Australia where over 50,000 daily infections were registered this week.
Mortality
From May 7 through May 13, about 10,600 fatalities were recorded worldwide which is 2,800 less than during the previous comparable period.
Over 1,500 people died in the US during this period. Germany is second with about 1,000 fatalities.
A sharp increase in mortality is recorded in Canada with more than 500 deaths over the past seven days. That said, the death toll dropped to its February levels in the UK and South Korea which used to be among the leaders in terms of the coronavirus fatalities.
