Kremlin spokesman doubts Musk will restore freedom of speech to Twitter

Dmitry Peskov stressed that Twitter was a global company and some European officials had begun saying already that they would not permit absolute freedom there

MOSCOW, April 28. /TASS/. Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov doubts that Elon Musk, who is purchasing Twitter, will manage to restore freedom of speech to this social network.

"Russia’s attitude to this company is based on what that company has done, on censorship, on selective repressive measures against the company’s clients, on the distortion of information and on manipulations. It remains to be seen what will happen when the new owner takes over," he told the media, when asked if this transaction might have a positive effect on Russia’s relations with Twitter.

Peskov stressed that Twitter was a global company and some European officials had begun saying already that they would not permit absolute freedom there.

"There is a big question mark over whether truly full-scale, free range of opinion is possible on the Western social networks. We have very big doubts on this score," Peskov said.

On April 25, Twitter management said that Elon Musk was purchasing the company for $44 billion. According to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission, Musk will have to pay a fine of $1 billion should he change his mind. If Twitter upsets the deal, the compensation will go to Musk. The deal is to be closed on October 24, 2022.
