NEW YORK, March 3. /TASS/. The international regulator of domain names and IP addresses ICANN rejected Ukraine’s request to restrict the operation of the Russian segment of the Internet, the NBC channel reported on Thursday.
"Our mission does not extend to taking punitive actions, issuing sanctions, or restricting access against segments of the Internet," the regulator said in a statement.
Earlier, Ukraine, in the light of Russia’s special military operation, requested ICANN to block the creation of new Russian domains and disable DNS servers in Russia.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a televised address on February 24 that in response to a request by the heads of the Donbass republics he had made a decision to carry out a special military operation. The Russian leader stressed that Moscow had no plans of occupying Ukrainian territories.
After that the US, the EU, the UK and a number of other states announced that they would impose sanctions against Russian legal entities and individuals.
