Russia creates new test system to diagnose Nipah Virus, says top sanitary doctor

Nipah virus was first discovered in 1998 in Malaysia

ROSTOV-ON-DON, September 15. /TASS/. Russia has already developed a new test system to detect Nipah Virus, having recently erupted in India, Russia's chief sanitary doctor Anna Popova noted on Wednesday.

"My colleagues created the test system within days. Now, we are able to diagnose Nipah Virus either if we detect it or if a patient with such symptoms is identified," she told doctors from Rostov State Medical University.

Nipah virus was first discovered in 1998 in Malaysia. Since then, periodic outbreaks of the disease have been reported in Asia. The virus causes a potentially fatal swelling of the brain (encephalitis) and respiratory difficulties. Nowadays, there is no specific treatment or preventive measures for Nipah Virus, although they are still being worked on.
