Russia’s FSB prevents a series of school attacks in October

The attacks had no relation to international terrorism, FSB First Deputy Department Head Sergei Yegorov said

MOSCOW, November 22. /TASS/. Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) prevented a series of school attacks in October after the shooting spree at the Kerch polytechnic college, FSB First Deputy Department Head Sergei Yegorov said in the upper house of the Russian parliament on Thursday.

"This incident in Kerch, indeed, caused an upsurge. In October alone, we prevented a whole series of attacks on schools," he said.

Yegorov deems the situation as "very difficult". With this in view, he pointed to a need to update the laws on security of educational institutions.

The FSB official said the attacks had no relation to international terrorism.

"We have to deal with our own internal cases," he said.

On October 17, a local student, armed with a rifle, went on a shooting rampage and detonated a bomb on the campus of the Kerch Polytechnic College in Crimea. The shooter later turned the gun on himself and committed suicide.

Twenty-one people died because of the shooting and explosion at the Kerch technical college, including the gun-wielding teenage attacker who ended up taking his own life. Around 50 people were taken to local hospitals.
