Expert says COVID-19 incidence may increase in autumn if herd immunity is insufficient

According to the deputy director of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology, it would be possible to say that the pandemic is over when at least 70% of the population have immunity to the disease

MOSCOW, February 11. /TASS/. Incidence of the novel coronavirus infection may increase in Russia in the autumn if herd immunity fails to be developed by that time, Alexander Gorelov, a deputy director of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology, told TASS on Thursday.

"We must understand that is herd immunity is not developed, we will have another increase in coronavirus incidence in the autumn," he said, adding that it would be possible to say that the pandemic is over when at least 70% of the population have immunity to the disease either after having it or thanks to vaccination.

"It will depend on the vaccination scale, on how many people are ready to get vaccinated against the coronavirus infection, how soon we reach the necessary level of herd immunity," he stressed.
