SIRIUS /Federal Territory/, March 4. /TASS/. Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council Dmitry Medvedev believes that the country can be certain its security is effectively ensured only when there is firm stability far beyond the national borders.
He recalled that soon it would be 210 years since the Russian army entered Paris following the Napoleonic invasion.
"We have not gone so far to the West neither before nor after. Why did we need that at all? It was necessary to defeat the enemy and eliminate a direct military threat. But in addition, Russia also pursued major geopolitical aims. One of the most important ones was the comprehensive and lasting security of our borders. It can be effectively ensured only when the country is certain about stability beyond the perimeter the border signs mark," Medvedev said while delivering a lecture at the flagship educational marathon "Knowledge. First."
He emphasized: "That is, on a much larger scale. Moreover, the larger the country, the larger the scale of external stability that it needs. This is a pretty clear."
"Russia, like any great power, has strategic borders, of course, lying far beyond the geographical ones. They rest upon not on military force or financial injections, but on a much more solid, practically immutable basis," Medvedev concluded.
