NATO seeks to turn Moldova into foothold for geopolitical standoff with Russia — diplomat

According to Maria Zakharova, attempts to pull Moldova into NATO look particularly shameless amid the situation in Ukraine, which was largely provoked by the alliance’s irresponsible expansion policy

MOSCOW, April 10. /TASS/. By stating its readiness to deepen its cooperation with Chisinau, NATO apparently prepares to turn Moldova into a foothold geopolitical confrontation with Russia, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a commentary published Monday.

Earlier, NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana said that the alliance is ready to go as far in relations with Moldova as the republic is willing to go in relations with NATO.

"We say what deepening of cooperation of some states with the alliance and its promises of ‘support’ before the face of the ‘Russian threat’ lead to: color revolutions, coups, political instability and economic crisis. This is especially true for the post-Soviet space, which NATO treats as some kind of ‘foothold’ for geopolitical standoff with our country. Apparently, the same fate is prepared for Moldova as well," Zakharova said, commenting on this remark.

According to the spokeswoman, attempts to pull Moldova into NATO look particularly shameless amid the situation in Ukraine, which was largely provoked by the alliance’s irresponsible expansion policy.

"We hope that there are still political forces left in Moldova, who are able to comprehend that rapprochement with NATO can lead to a loss of sovereignty, and that the alliance’s unrestrained expansion is nothing but a continuation of Western neo-colonial traditions, which take into account neither countries’ internal political particularities nor their centuries-old well-established ties with neighbors," Zakharova concluded.
