Lavrov, US envoy agree to continue active contacts on climate change - Foreign Ministry

MOSCOW, July 1./TASS/. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry discussed Russian-US cooperation on climate change in a phone call on Thursday, and agreed to continue active bilateral contacts in the furtherance of the Geneva summit results.

Lavrov and Kerry "agreed to continue active bilateral contacts on the issue of climate change within the context of its discussion by the Russian and US presidents at the summit in Geneva with an emphasis on the importance of giving a boost to Russian-US cooperation," the Russian Foreign Ministry said. The phone call was initiated by the American side.

Lavrov and Kerry also discussed Russian-US cooperation on the track of the implementation of the aims of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change within the context of preparations for the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties in Glasgow, the ministry said.

The Russian-US summit, initiated by Washington, took place in the Swiss city of Geneva on June 16. Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Joe Biden discussed the state and the prospects of the further development of bilateral relations, the issues of strategic security, as well as international matters, including cooperation in the fight against COVID-19 and ironing out regional conflicts. The leaders also announced that the US and Russian ambassadors would return to Moscow and Washington.
