G20 finance leaders adopt statement without condemning Russia’s special operation

Russia’s and China’s representatives did not approve paragraphs 3 and 4, which were condemning Russia’s actions in Ukraine

NEW DELHI, February 25. /TASS/. G20 finance ministers and central bank governors approved a joint statement excluding provisions condemning Russia’s actions in Ukraine following their meeting in Bengaluru on Saturday.

According to a document made available to TASS, "All G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors agreed to paragraphs 1, 2 and paragraphs 5 to 17 along with Annexes 1 and 2."

Paragraphs 3 and 4 were condemning Russia’s actions in Ukraine, however, they were not approved by Russia’s and China’s representatives. "Paragraphs 3 and 4 of this document, as adapted from the G20 Bali Leaders’ Declaration (15-16 November 2022), were agreed to by all member countries except Russia and China," the document says.

The paragraph on the situation in Ukraine notes, for instance, that the majority of the officials deplore "in the strongest terms" Russia’s actions in Ukraine, adding that the Ukrainian crisis adversely impacts the global economy. The document points out that "there were other views and different assessments of the situation and sanctions." "Recognising that the G20 is not the forum to resolve security issues, we acknowledge that security issues can have significant consequences for the global economy," the unapproved paragraph stated.
