Over 1,200 people arrested in the wake of January protests in Moscow

MOSCOW, February 25. /TASS/. Over 1,250 people have been arrested by Moscow courts for administrative violations following the January 23 unsanctioned rallies, Ulyana Solopova, a spokesperson for the Moscow City Court, informed TASS.

She informed that since January 23, 2021, 5,716 cases of administrative violations due to participation in mass rallies have been submitted to Moscow courts. In total, 1,251 people were arrested, and 2,500 were fined, while an additional 245 cases were returned for further work, the spokesperson added. The rest of the materials are still being processed by courts.

Unsanctioned rallies in support of Alexey Navalny were held in Moscow and other major cities on January 23 and 31. On February 2, people took to the streets in Moscow after Navalny’s suspended sentence was replaced with a real one. Law enforcement bodies repeatedly warned their participants of liability for taking part in an unsanctioned event. Only on January 23, nearly 2,000 people were detained in Moscow.
