Renovation of checkpoint on border with China to start this year — governor

The number of lanes at the vehicle checkpoint will grow to 28 after renovation, the Russian Transport Ministry said on its Telegram account

CHITA, March 24. /TASS/. The large-scale renovation of the Zabaikalsk international vehicle checkpoint on the border with China will start this year, Governor of the Trans-Baikal Region Alexander Osipov said on his Telegram account.

"The international vehicle checkpoint is at the stage of renovation design. The work is planned to start this year. Currently, 70-800 vehicles per day are passing via the checkpoint at the peak. The throughput capacity will grow many-fold after the renovation - it will total 2,400 automobiles per day," Osipov said.

The upgrade will also be performed at the railway checkpoint. Fifty-two trains per day can now pass through it in total over two tracks. The figure will be 66 trains per day after the upgrade. The renovation of checkpoints will facilitate growth of international trade turnover, the governor noted.

The number of lanes at the vehicle checkpoint will grow to 28 after renovation, the Russian Transport Ministry said on its Telegram account. The checkpoint will also be fitted with high-technology equipment. These measures will enable reducing the standard truck inspection time to ten minutes.

"In order not to stop export and import operations, construction of cargo, passenger and car components of the checkpoint will be performed phase by phase. Attention will be paid to the cargo component at the first stage. Throughput capacity will grow as a result from 280 to 1,600 trucks per day," the ministry said.

The Zabaikalsk international vehicle checkpoint is the largest Sino-Russian border crossing.
