VIENNA, May 4. /TASS/. Hungary will not be able to support the embargo on Russian oil supplies in the way suggested by experts of the European Union, Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said on Wednesday in the video address posted on his page in Facebook [banned in Russia; owned by Meta recognized as extremist in Russia - TASS].
"The package of sanctions prepared in Brussels stipulates the ban on crude oil supplies from Russia to Europe within the rather short time, in case of Hungary - by the end of the next year," the Foreign Minister said. The Hungarian government cannot agree to such step because it will make irreparable damage to the country’s energy security, Szijjarto added.
Budapest will approve the embargo on Russian oil supplies only in case it will not cover feedstock supplied over pipelines, the Minister said. Hungary is receiving oil from the Druzhba oil pipeline built in the last century. "This is not the issue of absence of the political will, intentions or time but simply the reality conditioned by physical, geographic and infrastructural factors," he added.
The European Commission earlier announced the sixth package of sanctions on Russia, which comprises a deferred ban on crude oil and petroleum products export to the European Union. The ban can be put into effect at the turn of this year - early next year.
