Speed highways on Hainan to stretch along 1,153 km by the end of 2019

The province currently holds 14th place in China on the total road network length

HAIKOU, October 5. /TASS/. The total length of road network in the southern Chinese province of Hainan will reach 1,153 km by the end of 2019, the head of the Provincial Transport Directorate, Lin Dong, said at a press conference on the local transport infrastructure  achievements over 70 years since the formation of China's People's Republic, www.hinews.cn reported.

Seventy years ago, more than 90% of all roads on the island had no coating, and the only way to get to Hainan from mainland China was by sea. The only operating port on the island at that time could take vessels with a displacement of not more than 500 tonnes, and the airport served only four flights.

At present, Hainan Province ranks 14th in China in terms of the total road network, which exceeds 35,000 km. New highways, being built together with the ring road around the island, form an advanced road network.

Seaports in the province now have a total of 148 berths, 74 of which are deep-sea and capable of accepting vessels with a displacement of over 10,000 tonnes. There are 9 international, 33 domestic container shipping routes in the province.

The two main Hainan airports in the cities of Haikou and Sanya are currently serving over 20 million people in total annual passenger traffic. These figures suggest the province ranks third after Shanghai and Guangdong airports. Together with two other Hainan airports in Qionghai and Sansha, these airports serve over 500 domestic and international routes.
