Commander of NATO Mission Iraq points to rapprochement between Moscow, Tehran

Giovanni Iannucci mentioned "a completely new NATO model" in Iraq

ROME, November 29. /TASS/. Russia and Iran have become significantly closer recently, particularly amid the Ukrainian conflict, so NATO needs to pay more attention to the Middle East, Commander of the NATO Mission Iraq Lieutenant General Giovanni Iannucci said in an interview with Italy’s La Repubblica newspaper on Tuesday.

"The bloc’s new strategic vision, which was approved at the Madrid summit in June, addresses global threats and especially concerns the Middle East. The strategic rapprochement between Moscow and Tehran, particularly as a result of the Ukrainian conflict, has become clear and we can already feel it, though indirectly. This is why we are experimenting with another approach, trying to foresee crises. We feel that we are protecting NATO’s external border, thereby facilitating stability in our countries," he pointed out.

Iannucci mentioned "a completely new NATO model" in Iraq. "It is a mission where the goals are very clear and they coincide with Iraq’s goals, which are to bring forces to a position that would guarantee peace and stability," he added.
