Lebanon expects concrete results from agreement with Israel — prime minister

Nawaf Salam believes that setting a clear timeline for the parties to fulfill their obligations would help speed up the reconstruction of damaged infrastructure and create conditions for displaced people to return home

BEIRUT, September 28. /TASS/. The Lebanese government expects active US support for implementing the peace agreements with Israel, which would allow Lebanon to restore sovereignty over its entire territory, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said after talks with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington.

Salam called for more active implementation of the framework agreement signed with Israel on June 26, according to the government press service. He said Lebanon expected concrete results and practical steps, including the start of the withdrawal of Israeli troops from southern Lebanon.

In his view, setting a clear timeline for the parties to fulfill their obligations would help speed up the reconstruction of damaged infrastructure and create conditions for displaced people to return home. Salam also stressed the importance of mobilizing US and international assistance to Lebanon to launch the reconstruction of areas affected by the war.

The prime minister said that the Lebanese army needs to strengthen its defense capabilities so that it can carry out its mission of extending state authority across the entire country.

Rubio, for his part, reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to supporting Lebanon and its legitimate institutions. According to him, continued implementation of the agreements between Israel, Lebanon and the United States will help achieve stability and security in the region.
