Future of talks hinges on US confidence-building measures — Iranian parliament official

If such measures are taken by the US side and Tehran sees tangible results, this will provide the basis for further progress, Iranian Parliament National Security Committee Chairman Ebrahim Azizi stated

TEHRAN, May 26. /TASS/. Iranian Parliament National Security Committee Chairman Ebrahim Azizi said that the future of negotiations between Iran and the United States depends on whether Washington takes steps to build trust.

"At this stage, everything depends on whether the US takes confidence-building measures," he said, according to Iranian broadcaster Al Alam.

"If such measures are taken by the US side and we see tangible results, this will provide the basis for further progress," Azizi added.

Iranian Parliament National Security and Foreign Policy Committee spokesman Ebrahim Rezai said a day earlier that Iran believes negotiations and agreements with the United States are possible only under the principle of "action for action."

The United States and Israel launched a military operation against Iran on February 28. On April 7, US President Donald Trump announced a "double-sided" two-week ceasefire with Iran. On April 11, the parties held several rounds of talks in the Pakistani capital of Islamabad. According to both Tehran and Washington, they were unable to agree on a long-term solution to the conflict due to multiple disagreements.

On April 21, the US president announced plans to extend the ceasefire with Iran. On May 19, Trump said the US was ready to give diplomacy a chance, postponing military operations until the beginning of next week.

On May 23, the US leader stated that an agreement had been largely negotiated, but he said the following day that the sides had not yet reached final agreements on several issues.
