The Japanese government hopes for a "breakthrough in the crisis" over Ukraine due to the conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US leader Donald Trump, as well as other countries' diplomatic efforts, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi stated.

"The government hopes that diplomatic efforts by the countries concerned, including this phone talk, will lead to a breakthrough in the situation," he said, referring to the conversation between Putin and Trump.

Meanwhile, Hayashi reiterated that Tokyo "will continue to work closely with the international community" and hopes for "positive actions by Russia" to achieve "an early ceasefire as well as a lasting and just peace."

On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin and US leader Donald Trump spoke over the phone. Putin described the more than two-hour conversation as informative and frank. It marked their third call since the beginning of the year.
