Trump to travel to Rome on April 25 to attend funeral of Pope Francis

The funeral is scheduled for April 26

WASHINGTON, April 23. /TASS/. US President Donald Trump will travel to Rome on Friday to attend the funeral of Pope Francis due on Saturday, and will return to the United States on the same day, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has told reporters.

"Pope Francis touched millions of lives and dedicated his life to serving the Catholic Church. As a mark of respect for his memory, President Trump ordered flags be flown at half staff, and he will be traveling to attend his funeral in Rome. The President will depart from Washington on Friday morning and return to the United States on Saturday evening following the funeral service," she said.

On April 21, Trump has confirmed his going to Rome to the funeral of Pope Francis with his wife Melania. The funeral is scheduled for April 26.

Pope Francis died on April 21 at the age of 88. He took the helm of the Catholic Church as the 266th pope in 2013, following the resignation of his predecessor Benedict XVI (1927-2022).
