BUDAPEST, March 19. /TASS/. Hungary and Vietnam speak in support of peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine and expect talks between Russia and the US to be fruitful, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs Peter Szijjarto said following a meeting with his Vietnamese counterpart Bui Thanh Son in Hanoi.
"We agreed that the military conflict in Ukraine cannot be resolved on the battlefield, this has been proven up to the hilt. We agreed that only peaceful talks may stop the war and establish peace in Ukraine," he said in an interview aired by the Hungarian M1 TV channel.
"This is why both Vietnam and Hungary hope that the Russian-American talks that have started recently, will bring peace to Ukraine," the minister stressed, adding that the telephone conversation between the Russian and US presidents, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, on March 18 "was very encouraging."
"We have not been closer to peace in recent three years than now, and we hope that Brussels will not undermine those peaceful efforts," Szijjarto noted.
Putin and Trump held a phone call on March 18, discussing the idea of a 30-day ceasefire in the conflict in Ukraine, ways to prevent a further escalation of tensions and a number of international issues. The Russian leader supported the US president’s initiative for the parties to the conflict to abandon strikes on energy infrastructure.
