BEIRUT, March 7. /TASS/. The domestic security authority in Syria’s Tartus has decided to extend a curfew for two more hours - until midday (9:00 a.m. GMT) Friday "for security reasons and military purposes," the Al Watan daily reported.
The republic’s new government initially imposed a 12-hour curfew in the governorate at 10 p.m. on Thursday.
On March 6, clashes broke out in various areas of Latakia between Syrian security forces and armed groups supporting former Syrian President Bashar Assad. The fiercest fighting took place in Jableh, where the Alawites, representatives of the religious minority, to which the Assad family belongs, live. Russia’s Khmeimim airbase is located next to Jableh.
Earlier, units of the army subordinate to the new Syrian authorities said they were entering the cities of Latakia and Tartus to fight the militias. The Department of Internal Security announced the start of a large-scale operation to combat supporters of the ex-president.
