Trump administration plans to revoke refugee status from 240,000 Ukrainians — report

According to Reuters, the planned legal status revocations will also affect 70,000 Afghans, including opponents of the Taliban (banned in Russia), along with 530,000 Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans and Venezuelans

WASHINGTON, March 6. /TASS/. US President Donald Trump’s administration could revoke the temporary legal status of at least 240,000 Ukrainian refugees, Reuters reported, citing sources.

Expected in April, the move could affect the Ukrainians that left for the US after Russia started a special military operation in Ukraine, according to the report. Immigrants affected by the decision could face fast-track deportations.

The planned rollback of protections for Ukrainians is not directly related to the acrimonious exchange between Trump and Vladimir Zelensky at the White House on February 28, Reuters reported. It is part of a broader effort to expel 1.8 million immigrants allowed to enter the US under programs initiated by former US President Joe Biden.

According to Reuters, the planned legal status revocations will also affect 70,000 Afghans, including opponents of the Taliban (banned in Russia), along with 530,000 Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans and Venezuelans.

Trump signed an executive order immediately after his inauguration to declare a state of emergency at the US border with Mexico. He said it would allow troops to be sent to the southern border to "repel a catastrophic invasion" of illegal immigrants into the country. Trump has repeatedly called for a harsher immigration policy and vowed to carry out the largest ever US operation to deport illegal immigrants.
