Hungary’s Orban to tell EU leaders at March 6 summit that Kiev’s EU accession unrealistic

In Hungary’s view, Orban argued, Ukraine joining the EU any time soon would ruin both the country’s agriculture and the entire European economy

BUDAPEST, March 3. /TASS/. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is planning to reject plans for Ukraine’s accession to the European Union at an EU summit in Brussels later this week as unrealistic.

"At the upcoming EU summit (the Special European Council meeting - TASS), we will say nothing but what we have been saying until recently: that accepting Ukraine into the EU would not be realistic," the Hungarian prime minister wrote on Facebook (prohibited in Russia due to its ownership by Meta, which is designated as extremist).

In Hungary’s view, Orban argued, Ukraine joining the EU any time soon would ruin both the country’s agriculture and the entire European economy.

Besides, Ukraine has not yet restored ethnic Hungarian minority rights in Transcarpathia, nor has it refrained from actions that put Hungary’s energy security at risk, he insisted. Budapest put forward exactly these demands, too, when Kiev’s integration into European agencies was discussed.

However, Orban has not ruled out allowing Ukraine to join the EU should it meet the necessary requirements and certain criteria for accession.
