MOSCOW, February 18. /TASS/. The delegation of Russia’s Federation Council led by Speaker Valentina Matviyenko has departed for Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa, the press service of the upper house of parliament reported, also emphasizing that The Ethiopian Herald newspaper has described the visit as "historic."
"The Ethiopian Herald calls this visit historical and notes that both capitals expect that it would serve as a foundation for the creation of numerous promising projects, which would be beneficial for the people of both countries," the upper house said in a statement.
The press office noted that prior to the speaker’s visit, she was interviewed by the newspaper, where she said that its main objective would be to "provide a catalyst for the augmentation of traditionally mutually beneficial and productive bilateral cooperation across a diverse spectrum of sectors."
"Our countries are connected by a rich history of mutually respectful relations. Ethiopia was the first African capital with which Russia established diplomatic relations. Since then, they have only developed and strengthened, and I see our main task in supporting the growth of these endeavors in all areas," the Federation Council speaker was quoted as saying.
According to her, the key to the success for the upcoming talks in Addis Ababa lies in the continuous support provided to Ethiopia by Russia for numerous decades. "It is widely acknowledged that the Ethiopian people hold the profound memory and reverence for the substantial and highly significant Soviet legacy. With the invaluable assistance of the former USSR, numerous major infrastructure projects were established, including industrial enterprises, energy facilities, and engaging in active military and technical cooperation," she said.
The speaker also expressed optimism that the visit would be successful, noting that this was exactly the goal the large delegation had in mind when departing from Moscow for Addis Ababa.
The delegation includes senators, as well as representatives of 14 ministries and agencies, prominent companies and scientific organizations. The Federation Council’s press service stated that meetings between Matviyenko and Ethiopia’s leadership, as well as speakers of both of the country’s houses of parliament are planned.
