BRUSSELS, December 13. /TASS/. Top diplomats from all 27 European Union countries will gather on December 16 to discuss the situation in Syria following the fall of the Bashar Assad regime and the "importance of the EU presence" there, a high-ranking EU official said.
The official noted that the Syria situation is shrouded in uncertainty and it is impossible to predict its further development. "But it is crucial that the EU maintain a presence," he said, adding that Syria will top the agenda of Monday’s meeting.
When asked whether the EU foreign minister will look at lifting sanctions off Syria, he said that the idea is not in discussing the future of sanctions regime but in assessing the actions of Syria’s new authorities. It would be too early to discuss the sanctions regime on Monday, he added.
