Over 13,000 children among those killed in Gaza, UNICEF chief says

"Thousands more have been injured, or we can't even determine where they are, they may be stuck under rubble," Catherine Russell added

NEW YORK, March 18. /TASS/. Over 13,000 children have been killed in the Gaza Strip after the Israeli-Palestinian conflict escalated on October 7, 2023, Catherine Russell, executive director of the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF), said.

"More than 13,000 children already have been killed, which is an astronomical horrifying number. Thousands more have been injured, or we can't even determine where they are, they may be stuck under rubble," she pointed out in an interview with CBS News.

The Gaza Strip’s Health Ministry announced on March 17 that the number of Palestinians killed since the start of Israel’s military operation had exceeded 31,600, and over 73,600 people had suffered injuries.

Tensions in the Middle East flared up again on October 7, 2023, after militants from the radical Palestinian group Hamas launched a surprise incursion into Israeli territory from the Gaza Strip, killing residents of border communities and taking people hostage. Israel started carrying out strikes on targets in the Strip and certain areas of Lebanon and Syria.
