Head of Gagauzia region asks Russia to raise issue of infringement on its autonomy at UN

Yevgenia Gutsul won the Gagauzia elections in May 2023 and proclaimed a course towards strengthening the region’s ties with Russia

MOSCOW, March 12. /TASS/. The head of Moldova's autonomous Gagauzia region, Yevgenia Gutsul, has called on the Russian leadership to raise the issue via the UN of undue pressure and infringement by the Moldovan authorities on the region’s autonomous status.

She said that she had discussed this issue with Russian Presidential Administration First Deputy Head Sergey Kiriyenko. "I’ve talked to Mr. Kiriyenko about this; I want the international community to hear about our problems, about the pressure we’re under. And, of course, [I want] Gagauzia to be heard on the UN platform with the help of [Russian President] Vladimir Vladimirovich [Putin]," the regional head said during a Rossiya-24 TV broadcast.

Gutsul won the Gagauzia elections in May 2023. After her victory, the politician proclaimed a course towards strengthening the region’s ties with Russia and criticized Chisinau’s policy of confrontation with Moscow. The Moldovan authorities tried to declare Gutsul's victory illegal, but the Gagauzia regional parliament expressed solidarity with her. Several rallies were held in support of the new head of the region. The Moldovan parliament amended the country’s tax code, which reduced the region's budget revenues.
