Estonian parliament rejects bill calling for immediate removal of Soviet monument

The initiative of the opposition Conservative People's Party envisioned that the Riigikogu would address the government with a proposal to demolish Soviet monuments

VILNIUS, January 16. /TASS/. Estonia's Riigikogu (parliament) has rejected a bill initiated by the Conservative People's Party faction to immediately demolish all "red monuments" built under the Soviet regime, including the monument to Soviet soldiers in Tallinn known as the Bronze Soldier, the online portal of the ERR Public Broadcasting Company said.

"The explanatory note to the bill stated that the relocation of the Bronze Soldier from central Tallinn to the Military Cemetery did not change anything," the report said.

The initiative of the opposition Conservative People's Party envisioned that the Riigikogu would address the government with a proposal to demolish Soviet monuments. However, it failed to win parliamentary support. Fourteen MPs voted in favor, 54 were against it, and 21 politicians abstained.
