Israel, by striking Syria, wants to draw it into Middle East conflict, expert says

"Their plan has no chance of succeeding, but Israel is still provoking Syria, although the Syrians do not need to be dragged into the conflict," Vitaly Naumkin pointed out

MOSCOW, November 27. /TASS/. Israel continues to strike Syrian territory in order to drag Damascus into the Middle East conflict, but these efforts are all for naught, Vitaly Naumkin, Academician at the Russian Academy of Sciences, Scientific Head of the Institute of Oriental Studies, told TASS.

"Israel is provoking, trying to bring Syria into the conflict so as to open a second front and then start a war with them. They realize that from a position of weakness, Syria can't resist anything from Israel. Israel now has a motivated, consolidated, strong army," he said on the sidelines of the Primakov Readings forum. "Their plan has no chance of succeeding, but Israel is still provoking Syria, although the Syrians do not need to be dragged into the conflict."

On November 26, Syrian government radio station Sham FM reported that Israeli forces struck the runways of Damascus International Airport. Earlier, the radio reported explosions in Damascus’ suburban neighborhoods of Mezzeh and Muadamiyah.

The 9th Primakov Readings international forum is being held in Moscow from November 27 to 28. TASS is the general information partner of the Primakov Readings international forum and conference.
