LONDON, November 13. /TASS/. Former British Prime Minister David Cameron has been appointed as the country's next Foreign Secretary, according to a statement released by the office of the head of government Rishi Sunak.
"The Rt. Hon. David Cameron has been appointed Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs," the statement said. He will replace James Cleverly, who will now head the Home Office.
Cameron was elected prime minister in 2010 at the age of 44, becoming the youngest politician to hold the position since 1812. Cameron had been leader of the Conservative Party since 2005. In total, he served as head of government for six years - until 2016.
Cameron is best remembered for promising to hold a referendum on the UK’s exit from the EU if he won the 2015 election. When the party won, he kept his word and organized the plebiscite. When Cameron himself campaigned against Brexit, he resigned and left Parliament. He has not been involved in public politics since. After leaving politics in 2016, Cameron worked as a consultant in the private sector and held senior positions in charities. He has also published a memoir.
