US fears Russia may not return to New START treaty — Pentagon

On February 21, the Russian president announced his decision to suspend Russia's participation in New START in his State of the Nation Address to the Federal Assembly

WASHINGTON, March 9. /TASS/. The United States hopes that Russia will return to the New START treaty, but fears this may not happen, US Air Force General Anthony Cotton, commander of the US Strategic Command, said on Thursday in Washington at a hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee.

"I would hope that they come back and try to get in compliance. But hope is not a plan," the general said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced his decision to suspend Russia's participation in New START in his State of the Nation Address to the Federal Assembly on February 21. The president stressed that while Russia was not withdrawing from New START, before discussing resuming any work under the treaty, the country must understand for itself how New START would factor in the nuclear arsenals not only of the United States, but also those of the other nuclear powers in NATO, i.e. Great Britain and France.
