Former US top diplomat views China as ‘bigger threat’ than Russia

According to former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Xi Jinping seeks economic and political dominance in every corner of the world

LONDON, February 3. /TASS/. China poses a bigger threat to the world than Russia, former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in an interview with Sky News.

According to him, Chinese President Xi Jinping seeks "economic and political dominance in every corner of the world," while Russian leader Vladimir Putin "has no illusions about his capacity to dominate the world".

"Xi Jinping is a different creature. The globe is dependent on him economically," Pompeo noted, adding: "Those are two fundamentally different risks for our way of life in Europe, in the United States, in Asia, in the Middle East, everywhere."

When asked what a negotiated diplomatic solution to the Ukrainian conflict would look like, Pompeo emphasized the need to step up weapons supplies to Kiev in order to put "the Ukrainian people in the position where President Putin would be negotiating from weakness."

The United States’ 2022 National Security Strategy views China as the main challenge and considers Russia to be an "acute threat." According to US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, China "is the only competitor out there with both the intent to reshape the international order, and increasingly the power to do so.".
