At least 120 were hurt in Iranian earthquake — official

There have been no reports of deaths

MOSCOW, January 18. /TASS/. At least 120 people were hurt in the earthquake that struck near the northwestern Iranian city of Khvoy on Wednesday, the city mayor said.

"The number of casualties has reached 120," he was quoted as saying by the Fars news service. "Damage has been done to about 200 buildings."

There have been no reports of deaths.

The Tasnim news service reported that teams of the Iranian Red Crescent Society in the neighboring areas have been put on high alert to potentially provide assistance to the victims. A total of five aftershocks have been registered in Iran on Wednesday.

Seismologists earlier said a magnitude 5.9 earthquake was registered near the Iranian-Turkish border, with the center being 15 kilometers southeast of Khvoy and at the depth of 5 kilometers.
